Research - Similar Films.

Films that have SIMILAR STORY LINES

I decided to search online for films that had elements of their narrative that was similar to the narrative we are using in our film. Here are a few of the films I found.

A Single Man (2009)

This is the story of a University Professor, and how the death of his life long partner effects his psyche, leading him to suicide plans, until one of his students, whom he assumed was straight, came into his life and rekindles some joy in George Falconer's life.

I thought this film is easily related to our story line as it involved suicide, and how the leaving of a loved one can lead to normal individuals to drastically act on their own lives. There isn't much psychology involved compared to our story line, however i thought it went together very well with the idea that the death of someone close to an individual can cause serious suicidal thoughts and preparations.

Autumn Sonata (1978)

This is the story of world renown pianist Charlotte who neglects her children for many years, but when her long term partner passes away she decides to go see one of her daughters Eva at her home. When she arrives there, she discovers that her other daughter Helena, is living with Eva, and has been for two years after Eva took her out of the mental institute that Charlotte had put her in to look after her for the past 2 years. Tension builds until a conversation lets it all be released.

I thought this story line could be compared because it involves mental illness, but compared to our film it is much more obvious, whereas the mental illness is hidden until the very end of our film. There is also death, and the effect death of a loved one can have on a person, which is the main theme of our film.

Requiem For A Dream (2000)

This is the story of 4 parallel individuals, and their menacing addictions. Based in Brooklyn, the drugs are easily obtainable and helps the four keep their cycle of dependence. Harry, is your typical heroin junky, who gets help from his cocaine crazed girlfriend Marion and long time friend Tyrone. Meanwhile his widowed mother is obsessed with the glamour of TV and becomes addicted to diet pills. This film shows the disastrous consequences and the downward spiral their lives take as a result of their addictions.

I think elements of this films narrative would compare well with ours, as it shows the effects of what drugs can do to 4 very different people in different ways, and we try to show in our film that because of Carrie's psychological illness, she gets into drugs and this subsequently makes her want to commit suicide.
